Press Release
During July members of the Darling Range Wildlife Shelter (DRWS) celebrated their fourth year in Martin on a site adjoining the Darling Range National Park. The milestone was acknowledged with a traditional birthday cake and party.
Most recently DRWS was successful in securing a $117 000 grant from Lotterywest to be put towards a number of projects including new possum and bandicoot enclosures and switching to natural power through the installation of a significant solar power generation system. Funding was officially presented to the Shelter by the Honorable John Day MLA.
DRWS, a volunteer only and not-for-profit organisation, has over the four years developed the site with external fencing, a range of new enclosures and aviaries, hospital facilities and massive revegetation of the area.
The improvements have come, due in large part to a number of generous grants from Lotterywest, amazing community support and a tremendous amount of hard work from volunteers.
The Shelter’s dedicated volunteer group provides essential conservation services to sick, injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife. DRWS provides assistance to Australian native wildlife including joeys and juvenile kangaroos with numerous birds, possums, bandicoots and shingleback lizards also being nursed. Each year there are hundreds of admissions.
The Shelter’s primary objective is to work towards the release of wildlife back into their natural environment. Members work hard establishing and confirming safe and suitable release sites for all wildlife admissions.
Shelter members are skilled, compassionate and exceptionally dedicated. All have a love and commitment to wildlife.
The group would like to invite anyone with a passion for wildlife to join with them – new members are always welcome and are encouraged to speak with Racheal on 0400 802 409.
